Wedding Photographer in Colchester
for Relaxed, Alternative Couples
Are you here because you’re planning a wedding in Colchester? Whether you're saying "I do" in the town center, escaping to a woodland venue just outside town or throwing a colourful festival-style celebration, you're spoilt for choice around here.
I'm Chloe, an alternative wedding photographer based just down the road, and I've spent years photographing weddings across Colchester and the surrounding Essex countryside. From intimate ceremonies at Colchester Town Hall to outdoor celebrations at Browning Bros, relaxed days at Marks Hall Estate and creative weddings at The Minories, I've come to know this little corner of Essex pretty well.
The thing I love most about weddings in and around Colchester is that no two ever feel the same. You can have a relaxed town hall ceremony followed by a Wagamamas and a browse in the bookstore, a woodland wedding with your dog as ring bearer or a colourful celebrant ceremony where the only rule is that it feels like you.
If that sounds like your kind of day, have a scroll. I've pulled together some of my favourite local venues, real weddings, planning tips and little bits of insider knowledge to help you start dreaming up your own.
Chloe's Local Tip: Visiting venues? Go back and see them on a rainy weekday if you can. Everyone falls in love with venues in sunshine, but seeing how they feel on a gloomy day tells you so much more about the space.
Why I Love Photographing Weddings in Colchester
I'm probably a little biased because Colchester is home, but I genuinely think it's one of the most underrated places to get married in Essex.
Within half an hour you've got historic buildings, woodland venues, colourful festival spaces, country houses and a city centre town hall ceremony location. It means you don't have to squeeze your wedding into one particular style. You can build a day that actually feels like you.
Fancy a relaxed ceremony at Colchester Town Hall before wandering through Castle Park for a few photos? Easy.
Want a celebrant-led wedding surrounded by trees? You've got options.
Dreaming of dogs, pizza, disco balls and a field full of your favourite people? Yep... we've got those too.
It's also ridiculously easy for guests to get to, with great transport links, plenty of nearby accommodation and loads of brilliant pubs, cafés and restaurants if you want to turn your wedding into a whole weekend with your favourite humans.
What Kind of Wedding Works in Colchester?
Whatever your wedding looks like, there's probably a corner of Colchester that fits it.
One of my favourite things about photographing weddings around Colchester is how much variety there is within such a small area.
You could be...
Planning a relaxed outdoor ceremony surrounded by trees.
Keeping things intimate with a town hall ceremony before heading to your favourite pub.
Throwing a colourful festival wedding with pizza, lawn games and a dancefloor under the stars.
Planning a wedding that completely ignores tradition and makes the rules up as you go.
Wondering whether your dog can come too (spoiler: in quite a few places... yes!)
See what weddings in Colchester can actually look like
The best way to get a feel for a place isn't just by reading about it, it's by seeing real weddings there. Here are a few of my favourite celebrations right in the heart of Colchester.
Hannah & Ollie
Colchester Town Hall Elopement
An author & a skateboarder. Colchester Town Center. An elopement straight from the pages of a romantasy novel.
Amy & Ed
Alternative Wedding at The Minories
A red dress. 5 cakes. A Gothic Folly. A colourful celebration proving that wedding traditions are always optional.
My Favourite Wedding Venues in and Around Colchester
One of the best things about getting married in Colchester is that you don't have to choose between town or countryside. Within a short drive you've got everything from historic buildings and elegant estates to woodland ceremonies and colourful festival venues.
These are a few of my favourites to photograph (and why I think they're worth adding to your venue shortlist!).
A super cool Grade II listed farmhouse with a modern industrial barn vibe. The grounds are gorgeous, and there’s even accommodation on-site for your guests.
Perfect for you if you’re looking for something a bit more industrial inside, a fairly blank canvas but has a lot of natural character.
With two unique venues just outside Colchester, Browning Bros gives you the choice of saying your vows beneath the trees or beside the lake with a giant tipi as your backdrop. Relaxed, colourful and completely DIY-friendly, it's one of my favourite venues for couples who want to throw the rule book out the window.
Perfect for you if you're dreaming of a festival-style wedding where you can make the day completely your own, spend the whole weekend celebrating with your favourite people and dance under the stars.
A 200 acre arboretum full of gardens, lakes and woodland to explore. Whether you're planning an outdoor ceremony beneath the trees or celebrating in the elegant coach house, it feels relaxed, romantic and gives you loads of variety for your photos without ever feeling too formal.
Perfect for you if you're dreaming of a laid-back countryside wedding with beautiful gardens, plenty of outdoor space and a venue that feels timeless without being overly traditional.
Tucked away in the Essex countryside, Captains Wood Barn is perfect if you're after a wedding that feels connected to nature. Think woodland ceremonies, rustic barns and a relaxed atmosphere where muddy boots, tractors and colourful flowers feel completely at home.
Perfect for you if you're planning an outdoor or woodland wedding with a relaxed, nature-loving vibe and want your day to feel intimate, personal and completely unpretentious.
One of Colchester's most unique wedding venues, The Minories combines historic architecture with beautiful gardens and an unmistakably creative feel. It has an arty, alternative atmosphere that makes it perfect for couples looking for something a little different from the traditional country house wedding.
Perfect for you if you're after an intimate wedding in the heart of Colchester that feels creative, colourful and a little bit unconventional.
Just outside Colchester, Alpheton Hall Barns blends rustic Suffolk charm with modern, light-filled spaces. With beautiful barns, indoor & outdoor ceremony options and open countryside all around, it's the kind of venue that feels relaxed from the moment your guests arrive.
Perfect for you if you love the idea of a countryside barn wedding with outdoor ceremony options, loads of character and plenty of space for a relaxed celebration.
Chloe's Local Tip: Don't get too hung up on whether a venue is technically in Colchester. Some of my favourite wedding venues are just 15–20 minutes outside the town, and they still give you all the convenience of Colchester while feeling completely tucked away in the countryside.
There's a venue for every kind of wedding
One of the reasons I recommend Colchester so often is because there really isn't one "type" of wedding here.
Within a short drive you've got everything from intimate town hall ceremonies and elegant country estates to woodland venues, tipi weddings and relaxed barn celebrations. Whether you're planning a huge party or keeping things small with your closest people, you'll find somewhere that fits your vision rather than trying to squeeze your day into a venue that doesn't.
You don't have to disappear for hours for great photos
One thing I always tell my couples is that your wedding day should feel like... well, your wedding day. Not a photoshoot.
One of the things I love about photographing weddings around Colchester is that so many venues have beautiful gardens, woodland or countryside right on the doorstep. If you're getting married in town, places like Castle Park and The Minories are only a short walk away.
That means we can sneak away for 10–15 minutes, create some beautiful photos together and get you back to your guests before anyone starts wondering where you've disappeared to.
Easy for guests to get to
One of the biggest advantages of getting married around Colchester is how accessible it is. With direct train links from London, easy access from the A12 and plenty of accommodation nearby, it's a brilliant choice if your guests are travelling from different parts of the country.
If you're getting married in the town centre, there are plenty of car parks, hotels, pubs and restaurants all within walking distance. For countryside venues, most are only a short drive away, giving you the best of both worlds.
Make the day your own
One of the best things about the venues around Colchester is how flexible they are. Whether you're planning a celebrant-led ceremony, including your dog, ditching traditions that don't feel like you or filling the day with pizza, lawn games and disco balls instead of a formal wedding breakfast, there are loads of venues that embrace weddings that do things a little differently.
As someone who photographs a lot of alternative, colourful and laid-back celebrations, I absolutely love that no two weddings around here ever feel the same.
Whether you've already booked your venue or you're still trying to decide where to get married, here are a few things worth knowing when you're planning a wedding in and around Colchester
Things I'd Tell Anyone Planning a Wedding in Colchester
Why I Love Photographing Weddings Around Colchester.
I'm Chloe an alternative wedding photographer based in Colchester, documenting relaxed, colourful weddings across Essex, Suffolk and beyond.
Living locally means these aren't venues I've photographed once or twice on a random Saturday. They're places I return to throughout the year and genuinely know inside out. I've wandered through Castle Park with newlyweds, photographed confetti through the trees at Captains Wood Barn, captured colourful celebrations at Browning Bros and spent golden hour exploring the gardens at Marks Hall Estate.
More importantly, I know that no two weddings here ever look the same. Whether you're planning an intimate elopement, a laid-back barn wedding, a celebrant ceremony in the woods or a festival-style weekend with pizza and disco balls, my approach is always the same: keeping things relaxed, capturing real moments and making sure you spend more time with your favourite people than standing around posing for photos.
I know I'm biased, but I genuinely think Colchester is one of the best places in Essex to get married and I feel incredibly lucky that I get to call it home.
One final piece of advice...
If you're still deciding on a venue, don't just think about how it looks. Think about how you want your day to feel. The best venue for you is the one that lets you celebrate in a way that feels relaxed, comfortable and true to the two of you.

That depends on your venue, but some of my favourite locations include Castle Park, The Minories gardens, woodland walks and the beautiful grounds that many local venues already have. I always try to keep portraits relaxed and close to your venue so you spend more time celebrating with your favourite people and less time away from the party.

Most couples book 12–24 months before their wedding, especially for popular spring and autumn dates. If you've already chosen your venue, it's definitely worth getting in touch sooner rather than later to check my availability.
-
If you'd rather spend your wedding day hanging out with your favourite people than standing in endless photo lines... we'll probably get on brilliantly.
