An Alternative Wedding at The Minories, Colchester

Amy & Ed had a super relaxed wedding at the Minories, Colchester

A bride in a red dress with short black hair holds hands with her groom in a black tuxedo. They stand in an arch of a gothic building outside.

When Amy & Ed first got in touch about their wedding at The Minories in Colchester, I knew it was going to be something cool.

They weren’t fussed about a full-day production. No staged “getting ready” photos or rigid timeline. Their ceremony was later in the afternoon, so they booked half-day documentary coverage focused on what actually mattered to them. The ceremony, their people, and everything that unfolded naturally around it. Which I love!

As a Colchester wedding photographer, I love days that feel intentional rather than performative. Amy & Ed stripped things back and built a wedding that felt relaxed, alternative, and completely them.

Why The Minories Is Perfect for an Alternative Wedding in Colchester

The Minories is one of the most unique wedding venues in Colchester.

It’s right in the town centre, literally ten minutes from my house, but once you step into the gardens, it feels like you’ve stumbled into a secret hideaway. You’d never guess the busy high street is just around the corner.

The ceremony space sits inside the gothic-style folly at the back of the gardens. And it’s SO COOL. Atmospheric, slightly dramatic, a little bit moody and perfectly imperfect.

If you’re planning an alternative wedding in Colchester and don’t want a traditional hotel or barn setting, The Minories gives you something different. It has character, it has edge. It has that creative, slightly unconventional energy that suits couples who want to do things their own way.

Red Dress Energy & Flipping Tradition

From the start, Amy & Ed were doing things differently.

They arrived together. They hung out with their mates before the ceremony. There was no “don’t look at each other” rules. No forced traditions. Just good vibes and time spent with their favourite folk.

Amy wore a red dress (because who decided white is mandatory anyway?) paired with the cutest ‘Til Death bag. Ed went for a modern tux-style suit that gave the whole look a sharp, contemporary edge.

They joked that the vibe was accidentally giving Helena music video energy and as a big MCR fan, I was fully on board 🖤

It felt bold but romantic & slightly rebellious. Everything I’d want an alternative Colchester wedding to be

The Gothic Folly Ceremony at The Minories

The ceremony took place in the Minories folly, surrounded by gardens and their closest family and friends.

It was intimate without feeling small. Emotional without being overly formal. There were bursts of laughter, quiet glances, hands being squeezed.

The florals by The Foraged Bouquet added such a beautiful pop of colour against the gothic backdrop. It felt creative and personal rather than overly styled.

And once the “I do’s” were doneth strolled through a shower of confetti, had a quiet moment together and the day just flowed.

Drinks in hand. Guests chatting in the gardens. Candid moments everywhere.

As a documentary wedding photographer in Colchester, this is where I come alive. I love photographing the in-between moments & the relaxed conversations.

Five Wedding Cakes…

Ed’s mum made five wedding cakes.

Not one centrepiece cake for show. Five actual cakes. Homemade & loved. The elderflower & lemon cake, SO good!

It doesn’t get more personal than that.

Alternative weddings don’t have to be about breaking every tradition, sometimes they’re just about making those traditions feel more meaningful.

Documentary Wedding Photography at The Minories

Amy & Ed wanted natural, documentary-style wedding photography with a few cool portraits thrown in. They wanted the photos to feel like them and not spend too much time away from their guests.

The Minories is perfect for that approach. The gardens give you movement and space. The folly adds atmosphere. The town location means you could even sneak off for quick portraits without disappearing for hours.

If you’re planning a wedding at The Minories in Colchester and want a relaxed, alternative approach to your photography, this venue works beautifully for personality-filled, non-traditional days.
