A Relaxed Wedding at Lodge Farm Barns
Rachel & Joe had a super relaxed wedding at the Barns at Lodge Farm, Epping
Rachel & Joe’s wedding at Lodge Farm Barns was the perfect reminder that relaxed weddings are so the way to go.
It was colourful, windy and completely centred around what mattered most to them: good people, good food, and a day that actually felt personal.
With around 45 guests, the whole celebration felt intimate without feeling small. There was no pressure to perform or stick to traditions just because you’re “supposed to”.
Totally my dream to photograph.
Why Lodge Farm Barns Works So Well for Relaxed Weddings
Lodge Farm Barns is one of those Essex wedding venues that just works.
Rachel & Joe chose it because it suited their vibe perfectly. It’s relaxed, flexible, and full of different spaces you can really make your own. It gives couples the freedom to build a wedding day that feels personal rather than overly structured.
From a photographer point of view you’ve got SO much variety. Open outdoor space, modern barn interiors, cosy corners, and enough room that the day never feels cramped or rushed. It also works beautifully whatever the weather decides to do, which is ideal for British weddings where you can experience four seasons in an hour!
Whether you’re planning a laid-back spring wedding or a cosy autumn day, the Barns at Lodge Farm adapts to it.
Bold Colours, Disney Details & A Giant Cat Cut-Out
Rachel absolutely smashed the styling for this wedding.
Most of the décor and details were designed and made by her herself, which gave the whole day such a personal feel. The colour palette was bold, vivid and full of energy.
There were little nods to their personalities everywhere.
The tables were named after Disney rides as a tribute to their favourite place (and where they got engaged). Their cat couldn’t be there, so naturally she still made an appearance via the newspapers and a giant cut-out on the dance floor.
These are the kinds of details that make weddings memorable. Not because they’re trendy or Pinterest-perfect, but because they actually mean something to the couple.
It felt personal, vibrant and joyfully unfiltered. Exactly the kind of relaxed wedding energy I love documenting.
A Personal Celebrant Ceremony in The Granary
Instead of a traditional registrar ceremony, Rachel & Joe chose to have a celebrant-led ceremony in The Granary.
In my opinion you could feel the difference immediately.
It felt personal, relaxed and genuinely emotional rather than overly formal. There was laughter. There were tears. There was loads of personality woven into every part of it.
One of the most meaningful moments was their hand fasting ceremony, where their closest people were involved by wrapping ribbons around their hands as part of the ritual. It created this really beautiful feeling of community and support around them rather than the ceremony feeling like a performance happening at guests.
Those are always the moments I love most as a documentary wedding photographer, the bits that feel intentional and real.
Windswept Tractor Rides
The weather was classic Britain. Dry, overcast and VERY windy.
But instead of stressing about it, Rachel & Joe just embraced it fully which always makes for the best photos.
We definitely got slightly windswept after hopping on a tractor ride, but those moments ended up being some of my favourites from the whole day.
That’s the thing about relaxed wedding photography sometimes the “imperfect” moments are the ones that feel the most alive afterwards.
Documentary Wedding Photography at Lodge Farm Barns
As an Essex wedding photographer, this is exactly the kind of wedding I love documenting.
Relaxed timelines. Personal details. Space for people to actually enjoy themselves. Enough structure to keep things flowing, but not so much that the day turns into a military operation.
Rachel & Joe built a wedding around them rather than expectations, and that always translates into photos that feel more meaningful in the long run.
