Wedding Photographer in Colchester for Relaxed, Alternative Couples
Planning a wedding in Colchester? Whether you're saying "I do" in town center, escaping to a woodland venue just outside town or throwing a colourful festival-style celebration, you're spoilt for choice around here.
I'm Chloe, an alternative wedding photographer based just down the road, and I've spent years photographing weddings across Colchester and the surrounding Essex countryside. From intimate ceremonies at Colchester Town Hall to outdoor celebrations at Browning Bros, relaxed days at Marks Hall Estate and creative weddings at The Minories, I've come to know this little corner of Essex pretty well.
The thing I love most about weddings in and around Colchester is that no two ever feel the same. You can have a relaxed town hall ceremony followed by pints in a cosy pub, a woodland wedding with your dog as ring bearer or a colourful celebrant ceremony where the only rule is that it feels like you.
If that sounds like your kind of day, have a scroll. I've pulled together some of my favourite local venues, real weddings, planning tips and little bits of insider knowledge to help you start dreaming up your own.
Why I Love Photographing Weddings in Colchester
I'm probably a little biased because Colchester is home, but I genuinely think it's one of the most underrated places to get married in Essex.
Within half an hour you've got historic buildings, woodland venues, colourful festival spaces, country houses and a city centre town hall ceremony location. It means you don't have to squeeze your wedding into one particular style. You can build a day that actually feels like you.
Fancy a relaxed ceremony at Colchester Town Hall before wandering through Castle Park for a few photos? Easy.
Want a celebrant-led wedding surrounded by trees? You've got options.
Dreaming of dogs, pizza, disco balls and a field full of your favourite people? Yep... we've got those too.
It's also ridiculously easy for guests to get to, with great transport links, plenty of nearby accommodation and loads of brilliant pubs, cafés and restaurants if you want to turn your wedding into a whole weekend with your favourite humans.
Colchester has some pretty cool wedding photography locations
Some of my fave Colchester wedding venues
1. Houchins
A super cool Grade II listed farmhouse with a modern industrial barn vibe. The grounds are gorgeous, and there’s even accommodation on-site for your guests.
2. Browning Bros
With 2 locations Browning Bros offer a unique & alternative venue in the Colchester Countryside. You can either marry in the woodlands for a total boho vibe. Or get married by the lake with a tipi backdrop perfect for the ultimate festival wedding.
3. Colchester Castle
If you’re into history, this place is a showstopper. You can get married in the castle museum, surrounded by medieval artifacts. It’s a bit different and super memorable.
4. Copdock Hall
A 16th century Tudor barn with loads of character. With its charming brick walls, timber beams, and beautiful vineyard views, it’s a dreamy setting that effortlessly combines historic character with modern elegance.
5 Alpheton Hall
A bit outside Colchester, but worth the mention. This one’s got its own church, inside ceremony options as well as a woodland ceremony location. Beautiful grounds and the quirky rustic charm.
These places all have their own unique charm, whether you're after something rustic, historic, or just downright beautiful!
If you’re looking for someone to capture the magic of your Colchester wedding in all its fun, colourful glory, then let’s make it happen!
