An alternative wedding at Alpheton Hall Barns.

Courtney & Michael had a cool alternative & relaxed wedding at Alpheton Hall Barns, Suffolk

Some weddings can feel like a performance… This wasn’t one of them.

Courtney & Michael got married in May, surrounded by about 100 of their favourite humans, at one of my absolute favourite alternative wedding venues in Suffolk, Alpheton Hall Barns.
A day of people hanging out, laughing, crying, swearing a bit, and doing things their way. Exactly how it should be. They let the day unfold and did things exactly how they wanted to in a way that suited them. This is what I love, I love to just observe and photograph whats happening in front of me.

Why Alpheton Hall Barns works so well for alternative weddings

You’ve got three ceremony options. The church, the ceremony barn, or the outdoor woodland area. And let me tell you, that outdoor space is elite. Loads of room to move, to photograph from different angles, to capture reactions as they happen rather than forcing anything. It means the ceremony stays natural and the photos feel alive and document what happened.

The barn itself is a perfect blank canvas. It looks incredible even with minimal décor, but if you do want to go full DIY, nerdy, chaotic goblin energy… it absolutely holds that too.

There’s something really special about Alpheton Hall Barns and it’s not just how bloody good it looks.

Courtney & Michael chose it because it’s laid back, flexible, and genuinely welcoming. The owners, Nic & Carol, are the kind of people who don’t bat an eyelid if you suggest something a bit different. No idea is too weird. There's no pressure to do things “properly”. Just full trust in you and your vision. And from a photographer’s point of view? It’s a dream.

Sticking to your values & your vibe at your wedding.

Just because you’re having an alternative wedding. Doesn’t mean you can’t still include some traditional aspects your own way.

Courtney wore a white dress but she paired it with white high-top Vans, and cool  AF wife socks.
Michael wore a maroon suit (10/10 no notes).

Their buttonholes featured tiny bird skulls. The playlist was a mix of alt/emo bangers and video game music and the tables were decorated with center pieces featuring dragons Michael had made himself. There were hobbit signs, Lord of the Rings references and cool shit everywhere. They still included those ‘traditional’ elements of table plans and signage but it was geeky, quirky and completely unapologetically them. They’re the kind of details that tell you exactly who someone is without needing an explanation.

They skipped a ‘traditional’ wedding cake and went for a tower of mini Colin & Connie the Caterpillars, plus two big ones on top. At one point, Colin’s face fell off, Courtney screamed, everyone lost it. Absolute chaos. But sweet, sweet, beautiful chaos.

This is why 1000% why I love weddings like this. Your personality is present in every single moment.

Documentary photography at Alpheton Hall Barns

They had a bouncy castle & garden games but they also allowed space in their timeline to just exist and be present. Because of this the whole day felt chilled and intentional. Enough structure to keep things flowing, but loads of breathing room so it never tipped into stress. People actually had time to chat, catch up, laugh, sit quietly together. Which, as a documentary wedding photographer, is where the magic lives.

The speeches were a perfect mix of funny and emotional. The kind that give you laughter, tears, and those small in-between moments I’m always watching for. Hands being squeezed. Side glances. People wiping their eyes when they think no one’s looking.

Those are the moments that matter and truly capture the feeling of your day.

Not giving a fuck if it rains on your wedding day

It was overcast, with a bit of rain in the evening and instead of panicking, Courtney & Michael just leaned into it. They danced and they laughed and they fully embraced it.

Their portraits were chilled, but because they’re an alternative couple, we played around with some more band / movie-style posing too. Nothing overly stiff or forced. Just a little edge, a little drama, a lot of attitude.

Alpheton Hall Barns wedding FAQ

  • Short answer: absolutely.

Alpheton Hall Barns is ideal if you want a wedding that doesn’t feel forced or overly traditional. The venue is flexible, relaxed, and genuinely welcoming of couples who want to do things their own way. Whether that’s Vans instead of heels, an emo playlist, nerdy DIY details, or skipping traditions that don’t feel like you.

Zero judgement, no “that’s not how it’s usually done”, just support (& if you have some crazy idea Nic will bring it to life!)

  • Yes and it suits it so well.

The barn acts as a blank canvas. It looks great even with minimal styling, but it also holds its own if you want to go all-in with décor, florals, handmade details, or themed elements. Whether your vibe is understated or full chaotic creativity, it adapts.

  • British weather gonna British weather.

The great thing about Alpheton Hall Barns is that there’s flexibility if the weather changes. You’ve got indoor and outdoor options, covered areas, and plenty of space to adapt without stress. Rain doesn’t ruin the day it just becomes part of the story (and honestly, some of the best moments happen in it).

  • For 2027 wedding onwards, typically weddings for up to 120 people start from £6000. Additional charges may apply for weddings in the outside ceremony glade and prices may change dependent on season, midweek and year of your wedding. Head to https://alpheton-hall-barns.co.uk/booking/ for a detailed view of their pricing and to arrange viewings/bookings with them directly.

  • From a photographer’s point of view? It’s a dream.

    The layout allows for:

    • Natural movement during ceremonies

    • Multiple angles without being intrusive

    • Space for candid guest moments

    • A mix of woodland, barn, and open countryside backdrops

It works beautifully for documentary-style wedding photography, especially if you want photos that feel real rather than staged.

  • There are three ceremony options, which is a big reason couples love it:

    • A local church

    • Inside the barn

    • An outdoor woodland ceremony space

The outdoor ceremony area is a particular favourite. It feels intimate but open, and it gives loads of flexibility for movement, guest interaction, and natural moments (which also means better, more honest photos). Theres an outdoor PA system so you can have whatever music you’d like played.

  • It works really well for medium/large sized weddings.
Courtney & Michael had around 100 guests, which felt full but never crowded. There was still space to breathe, chat, play games, and actually enjoy the day without it feeling rushed or packed in.

  • Yes it’s perfect for that.

    If you want time to:

    • Actually hang out with your guests

    • Avoid rushing from one thing to the next

    • Build in breathing room

This venue really supports a more laid-back, people-first wedding day. Enough structure to keep things flowing, but not so much that it feels like a military operation.

  • A photographer who works observationally and understands how to use space.

This venue shines when you’re not being constantly posed or pulled away. A documentary or alternative wedding photographer will make the most of:

    • Guest interactions

    • Quiet in-between moments

    • Natural movement

    • Real reactions

The result? Photos that feel like the day actually felt.
